A year of challenges

Updated: Jun 14, 2023

11 days since 2017...

On the 11th of January we still have to congratulate the year? Well, happy New Year to all of you!

My little free time and I have found it necessary to make a short entry to say goodbye to the year (better late than never). Time got away from me and I didn't say goodbye as everybody does. How nostalgic we get on those dates hehe.

On the 31st, even though I was a bit far from home, nobody took away my Mecano - Un Año más moment. This time singing it in the cool Polish air with a German girl who sang the lyrics with me. Well, as my dear Ana Torroja would say, I also took stock of the good and the bad. In conclusion, I would sum up 2017 in 3 words: Year of challenges.

So, this year in Krakow I decided not to eat them directly. It wasn't planned, I actually went to buy them. But it wasn't one of my priorities and my little head forgot to get them at the last minute.

It has probably also been the year in which I have had the most sensations at the same time. That's the thing about living intense experiences. I have come to experience a different kind of happiness, independent happiness I would call it. Away from my family and friends, but with no desire to return. It sounds selfish, I know, but I imagine it would happen to all of you. But it doesn't sound so hard considering that I knew that my ticket had a return and expiry date, so the feeling was to make the most of every second.

As I say, the intense happiness I experienced on my Erasmus will be difficult to repeat. Nothing in this life can be tasted like the first time and for that reason, I think I will have different sensations, very nice for sure, but impossible to match the one I'm talking about. Having a job and a certain stability limits you in that sense. I experienced it when it was meant to be and I'm glad I did.

And it's funny, very recently I did a little poll on Instagram in which I put: I wish I could just... a)Work b)Study. After about 12 hours, I analysed the answers and it's funny to see how most people who are studying chose to work and vice versa. While you are studying you don't value the situation itself so much until you are working. Conclusion: I don't want to grow up.

  1. It has been the year of leaving home for more than two months.

  2. It has been the year of improving my language skills and opening up to the world.

  3. It has been the year of travelling more kilometres.

  4. It has been the year I have met by far the most people (Erasmus, ESN, Work).

  5. It has been the year that I have experienced the most feelings together. Good and bad.

  6. It has been the year that I have become more beautiful (as my grandfather would say). I even gained 9,5 kg. I'm halfway back to normal.

  7. It was the coldest year of my life. Poland is unforgiving.

  8. It has been the year of my total independence, the year in which I have most valued myself as a person.

  9. It has been the year in which I have achieved the most. In terms of work, academics and other long-standing challenges.

  10. And above all, it has been the year of travelling. I focused on Europe and I have visited 9 new countries: Poland, Germany, Austria, Ukraine, Brussels, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Netherlands and Hungary (I had already been here) and 15 new cities: Poznan, Wroclaw, Zakopane, Gdansk, Krakow, Warsaw, Vienna, Prague, Budapest, Lviv, Lodz, Brno, Bratislava, Brussels and Cologne.

This year, my main focus is on a very special trip with my family, a trip to remember forever and to experience that unique happiness I have told you about.

Thanks to all of you who, despite the distance, the time and my absent-mindedness, have been and are there.

See you soon with a post about my first New Year away from home. A somewhat controversial decision that I don't regret. A unique and super fun experience, even if there were no grapes 🙂 But yes, nowhere like at home.

And you, what are you proud of this year?

Here's to many more trips together, chin chin!
